おりがみをつくろう ( おりがみくらぶ より) りす　　　どんぐり

　夏の終り、ある森にリスが住んでいました。
　At the end of the summer, a squirrel lived in woods.

　リスはせっせとドングリを集めて、カシの木のすみかに運んでいました。
　The squirrel worked hard, collecting acorns and carrying them into his den in an oak tree.

　その様子を見ていた小鳥が、リスに声をかけました。
　Looking at him, a little bird spoke to the squirrel.

「やあ、リス君。さっきから何をしてるんだい？」
“Hello, Squirrelie. What have you been doing?”

「こんにちは、小鳥さん。ぼくは、冬ごもりの支度(したく)をしているのさ。冬は食べ物がないからね」
“Hello, Birdie. I am getting ready for the wintering. You know, in the winter, there will be no food.”

　いそがしそうに答えるリスに、小鳥は笑いました。
　The squirrel answered without stopping working, but the little bird laughed at him.

「アハハハハ。そんな事をしなくても、冬が来る前に南の国へ行けばいいのに。南の国は木の実も果物もどっさりあって、食べる物に不自由しないよ」
“Hahaha. You don’t have to do that. Why don’t you go to the South before the winter. You will find plenty of fruits and nuts in the South. You will never be hungry there.”

「へえ！　その南の国って、どこにあるんだい？」
“Really! Where is the South?”

「南の国はね、あの山の向こうだよ。まあ、二週間もあれば大丈夫」
“The South is over the mountain. Well, you will easily get there in two weeks.”

「あの山の向こうかあ。それでさ・・・」
“Over the mountain. Well, then …”

　リスがもっと聞こうとすると、めんどくさくなった小鳥はバタバタと飛んで行ってしまいました。
　The squirrel tried to ask him more, but the little bird felt lazy about answering his questions and flew away.

　リスはボンヤリと、遠い山をながめました。
　The squirrel vaguely stared at the far mountain.

「寒い冬を、あたたかく過ごせたらいいだろうなあ。木の実も果物も、どっさりだって。・・・いいなあ」
“I wish I could spend the cold winter somewhere warm. Plenty of fruits and nuts. … Oh, I wish.”

　リスは自分も、南の国へ行きたくなりました。
　The squirrel felt like going to the South himself.

　やがて秋が来ましたが、リスはドングリを集めるのも、あたたかい寝床(ねどこ)を作るのもやめて、毎日南の国で暮らす事ばかり考えていました。
　Before long, the autumn came, but the squirrel stopped collecting acorns and making the warm bed. He did nothing but think of living in the South.

　そうして、カシの木がすっかり葉っぱを落としてしまうと、
　Then, when all the leaves fell off the oak tree,

「南の国へ行こう！」
　he decided, “I am going to the South!”

と、本当に南へと出発(しゅっぱつ)したのです。
　The squirrel set off for the South.

　リスは森を抜け、走って走って山のふもとにたどり着きました。
　He went through the woods, ran and ran to reach the foot of the mountain.

　もう夕方で、足はクタクタにくたびれました。
　It was already in the early evening. His feet were killing him.

「今夜中に山のてっぺんにのぼって、南の国に『おはよう』のあいさつをするんだ！」
“I will go up to the top of the mountain before dawn and say ‘good morning’ to the South!”

　リスはそう言って自分をはげますと、一歩ずつ山をのぼって行きました。
　The squirrel encouraged himself saying so. He went up the mountain step by step.

　けれども足が痛い上に、お腹もペコペコです。
　However, his feet hurt and he was starving.

　おまけに夜風が、こおりそうな寒さです。
　Even worse, the evening wind was freezing cold.

「ああ、もう、だめだ・・・」
“Oh, I cannot go any further …”

　リスは大きな石を見つけて、そのかげで丸くなりました。
　The squirrel found a big stone and curled himself up behind it.

　そしてため息をついたとたん、気がつきました。
　He sighed, and suddenly he realized.

「そうか、小鳥たちは空を飛べるから、くたびれないで南の国へ行けるんだ」
“Oh yes, the little birds can fly. That is why they can go to the South without feeling tired.”

　その時です。
　It was then that

　リスは背中に、ナイフでさされたような痛みをおぼえました。
　the squirrel felt pain in the back. He felt like being stabbed with a knife.

　そして体が浮き上がり、あっと言う間に空高くつれさられたのです。
　Then, his body was lifted up. In an instant, he was taken up high into the sky.

　リスをつかまえて飛んだのは、恐ろしいトンビでした。
　It was a scary black kite who snatched the squirrel away.

　リスは逃げ出そうと思いましたが、クタクタであばれる元気もありません。
　The squirrel tried to run away, but he was too tired to resist.

　もっとも本当にあばれたら、地面に落とされて死んでしまいますが。
　Of course, if he had resisted, he would have been dropped to the ground and died.

「どっちにしても、ぼくは死んじゃうんだ」
“One way or another, I am doomed to die.”

　その時、ビュー！　と風が吹いたかと思うと、別のトンビがやって来て怒鳴りました。
　At that very moment, something whizzed through the air. Another black kite turned up and shouted.

「やい、痛い目にあいたくなかったら、そのエサをこっちへよこしな！」
“Hey, if you don’t want to be in trouble, give me your prey!”

「じょ、冗談じゃない！」
“No, no way!”

　リスをつかまえたトンビは逃げましたが、リスが重くて思うように飛べません。
　The black kite holding the squirrel tried to run away. However, the squirrel was so heavy, he was unable to fly so fast.

　たちまちトンビとトンビが、夜空でたたかいを始めました。
　Soon, these black kites started fighting in the night sky.

　リスは暗い夜空をツメでつかまれたままふりまわされ、痛さと怖さで何度も気絶(きぜつ)しそうになりました。
　The squirrel was held in the claws and swung around in the dark night sky. He was in pain and scared. He almost fainted many times.

　そのうちにリスをつかまえていたトンビが背中をつつかれて、思わずツメをゆるめたのです。
　As the fighting goes on, the black kite holding the squirrel was poked in the back. He happened to loosen his claws.

「うわぁー！」
“Oh my god!”

　リスは地面へと、まっさかさまに落ちて行きました。
　The squirrel dropped head-first toward the ground.

「もう、だめだ！」
“I’m done for!”

　リスは気を失いましたが、何かにぶつかって、ハッと目を開けました。
　The squirrel fainted, but he bumped into something and woke up.

　運が良い事に、リスは森の木の枝にひっかかったのです。
　Fortunately, the squirrel was caught in the branches of the woods.

　リスは力をふりしぼって、木をおりました。
　The squirrel used all his strength to climb down from the tree.

　そしてやっと地面におりて、リスが木を見上げてみると、
　Eventually, he came to the ground and looked up at the tree.

「ああっ、ここは！」
“Look where I am!”

　そこは今まで住んでいた森で、落ちた木はリスの家のカシの木だったのです。
　He was in the woods where he had lived. The tree he dropped onto was the oak tree where the squirrel’s den was.

　リスは大喜びで、作りかけの寝床(ねどこ)で丸くなりました。
　The squirrel was very happy. He curled himself up in the half-made bed.

「ああ、いい気持ち！　冬は寒くても、やっぱり自分の家が一番だ！」
“Oh, I feel so good! No matter how cold the winter is, there is no place like home!”

　リスは安心して、グッスリと眠りました。
　The squirrel felt safe and sound. He sank into a deep sleep.

ワンポイントアドバイス

・「リス君」「小鳥さん」は、「Mr. Squirrel」のようにMr、Miss等を付けて呼ぶこともできますが、「Squirrelie」「Birdie」のように愛称で呼ぶことで親近感が高まります。

・下記は日常的によく使われる口語表現です：
「いいなあ」 … 「I wish」。現状ではありえないことに対して呟く場合に適用されます。
「足はクタクタ」 … 「His feet were killing him.」。同様の表現として、「靴がきつくて痛い」は「My shoes are killing me」など。
「お腹もペコペコ」 …「He was starving」。
「こおりそうな寒さ」 …「freezing cold」。
「どっちにしても」 …「one way or another」。
「自分の家が一番だ」 … 「there is no place like home」。

・その他の表現として：
「思わず… ゆるめた」 … 「happened to loosen …」。「happen to」は、意図に反して何かを思わずしてしまう場合に適用されます。
「もう、だめだ」 … 「I’m done for」。非常に深刻な事態（命を落としてしまう、職を失ってしまう場合等）で使われます。
