　むかしむかし、あるところに、子どものいないおじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。
　Once upon a time, there lived an old man and his old wife who had no child.

　ある日の事、おばあさんが川へ洗濯に行くと、ドンブラコ、ドンブラコと大きなうりが流れてきます。
　One day, the old wife went to the river to do the laundry. She saw a large gourd was flowing in the river, floating up and down toward her.

「おやおや、何て大きなうりでしょう。家へ持って帰って、おじいさんと二人で食ベましょう」
“Look at that, what a large gourd! I should take it back home to eat with my husband.”

　おばあさんはうりを拾い上げると、家へ持って帰りました。
　The old wife picked up the gourd and took it back home.

　うりが大好物なおじいさんは、おばあさんが持って帰ったうりを見て大喜びです。
　A gourd was the old man’s favorite. He was very pleased to see the gourd.

「こんなに大きなうりは、初めて見た。・・・よし、わしが切ってやろう」
“I’ve never seen such a large gourd. … OK, let me cut it for you.”

　おじいさんが包丁(ほうちょう)を振り上げると、
　The old man lifted a knife to cut the gourd.

　うりはひとりでにパカッと割れて、
　It was when the gourd split itself, and

　中から可愛らしい女の子が飛び出してきました。
　a lovely girl came out of it.

「おや？」
“What?”

「まあ！」
“Oh, my!”

　子どものいないおじいさんとおばあさんは、大喜びです。
　Having no child, the old man and his old wife were very happy to see her.

　うりから生まれた子どもなので、名前を『瓜子姫(うりこひめ)』と名づけました。
　The girl was born out of a gourd so they named her “Princess Gourd.”

　赤ちゃんの頃から可愛い子でしたが、瓜子姫は大きくなるにつれてますます可愛らしくなり、やがて成長すると『けしの花』の様な美しい娘になりました。
　The Princess Gourd was a lovely baby girl, and as she grew, she became lovelier and lovelier.
　Before long, she grew to be a beautiful young lady like a poppy flower.

　そのあまりの美しさに、お殿さまがお嫁にほしいと言ってくるほどです。
　She was so beautiful, even the King proposed to her.

　瓜子姫は機(はた)をおるのがとても上手で、毎日楽しそうに機おりをしながら、
　The Princess Gourd was very good at weaving. She enjoyed weaving while

　おじいさんとおばあさんが帰って来るのを待っていました。
　waiting for the old man and his old wife to come home.

　ある日の事、瓜子姫がいつもの様に一人で機をおっていると、やさしそうな声で戸をたたく者がありました。
　One day, as always, the Princess Gourd was weaving alone. Someone with a kind voice knocked on the door.

「もしもし、可愛い瓜子姫や。この戸を、開けておくれ。お前の上手な機おりを、見せてほしいのさ」
“Hello, the lovely Princess Gourd. Please open the door. I want to see a very fine weave you made.

　けれども、瓜子姫は戸を開けずに言いました。
　The Princess Gourd answered without opening the door.

「いいえ。戸を開ける事は、出来ません。
“No, I cannot open the door for you.

　もしかすると、あまのじゃくという悪者が来るかもしれないから、誰が来ても決して戸を開けてはいけないと、おじいさんに言われているのです」
　Maybe, you are someone evil called a Demon.No matter who visited, I must not open the door. That’s what the old man tells me.”

　するとその声は、もっとやさしい声で言いました。
　Then, the voice became more kind.

「おやおや、あのあまのじゃくが、こんなにやさしい声を出すものかね。大丈夫だから、開けておくれ」
“Come on, do you think the Demon can make this kind voice? You will be fine, so open the door.”

「・・・でも、戸を開ける事は出来ません」
“… Even so, I cannot open the door.”

「それなら、ほんの少しだけ開けておくれよ。
“All right, then. Please open the door just a little.”

　ほんの少し、指が入るだけでいいからさ」
“Just a little, so I can put my finger in.”

「・・・それなら、指が入るだけ」
“… Then, just enough to put your finger in.”

　瓜子姫は、ほんの少しだけ戸を開けました。
　The Princess Gourd opened the door just a little.

　するとその声が、またやさしい声で言います。
　Then, the kind voice asked her again.

「ありがとう、お前は良い子だね。
“Thank you. You are a very good girl

　でも、もう少しおまけしておくれよ。
　Can you do me a bit more favor.

　ほんのもう少し、この手が入るだけでいいからさ」
　Open a little more, just enough to put my hand in.”

「それなら、手が入るだけ」
“Then, just enough to put your hand in.”

　瓜子姫は、また少し戸を開けました。
　The Princess Gourd opened the door a little more.

「お前は、本当に良い子だね。
“You are a really good girl.

　でも、もう少しおまけしておくれよ。
　Can you do me a bit more favor.

　ほんのもう少し、この頭が入るだけでいいからさ」
　Open a little more, just enough to put my head in.”

「それなら、頭が入るだけ」
“Then, just enough to put your head in.”

　瓜子姫がまた少し戸を開けると、
　The Princess Gourd opened the door a little more again.

　戸のすきまから頭を突き出したあまのじゃくが、するりと家の中へ入って来ました。
　The Demon put his head in through the gap in the door and sneaked into the house.

「けっけけけ。
“He-He-He.

　お前は、バカな娘だ。
　What a silly girl you are.

　じいさんとの約束を破って、おれさまを家に入れるなんて」
　You broke your promise with the old man and let me in the house.”

　あまのじゃくは瓜子姫の着物をはぎ取ると、
　The Demon stripped a dress off the Princess Gourd and

　瓜子姫を裏山の柿の木にしばりつけました。
　he tied her up on a persimmon tree on a hill at the back.

　それからあまのじゃくは瓜子姫の着物を着て、
　Then, the Demon put on her dress and

　瓜子姫に化けて機おりを始めました。
　he disguised himself as the Princess Gourd.

　間もなく、おじいさんとおばあさんが帰って来ました。
　Before long, the old man and his old wife came back home.

「瓜子姫や、さびしかったろう」
“Princess Gourd, sorry to have left you alone.”

　するとあまのじゃくが、瓜子姫の声をまねて答えました。
　The Demon mimicked the Princess Gourd’s voice.

「ええ、とってもさびしかったわ」
“Yes, I was missing you very much.”

　その時、家の前が騒がしくなりました。
　It was when it got noisy in front of the house.

　瓜子姫をお嫁にもらう為に、お殿さまのカゴが迎えに来たのです。
　A palanquin sent from the King arrived to pick up the Princess Gourd as the bride.

「瓜子姫や、お殿さまのお迎えが来たよ。これでお前は、何不自由なく幸せになれるよ」
“Princess Gourd, the King’s men are here to pick you up. You will live happily ever after.”

　おじいさんとおばあさんはとても喜んで、瓜子姫に化けたあまのじゃくをカゴに乗せました。
　The old man and his old wife were very happy and let the Demon who disguised himself as the Princess Gourd into the palanquin.

　カゴの行列はお城へ向かって、裏山の道を登って行きました。
　The palanquin and the King’s men headed to the castle. They walked up on the hill at the back.

　すると柿の木のてっペんで、カラスがこんな声で鳴き出しました。
　Then, at the top of the persimmon tree, a crow started crying.

♪カー、カー、カー、カー、かわいそう。
♪Caw, Caw, Caw, Caw, what a poor girl.

♪瓜子姫は、木の上で。
♪The Princess Gourd is left on the tree.

♪おカゴの中は、あまのじゃく。
♪Inside the palanquin is the Demon.

「おやっ？」
“What?”

　みんなはそれを聞いて、瓜子姫がしばりつけられている柿の木を見上げました。
　They all heard the crow and looked up at the persimmon tree, to which the Princess Gourd is tied.

「まずい、逃げよう」
“Oh, no, I got to run.”

　瓜子姫に化けたあまのじゃくはカゴから逃げようとしましたが、
　The Demon tried to run away from the palanquin, but

　お殿さまの家来に捕まって首をはねられてしまいました。
　the King’s men caught him and chopped his head off.

　こうして本物の瓜子姫がカゴに乗ってお城へ行き、
　Then, the real Princess Gourd was carried in the palanquin to the castle.

　お殿さまのお嫁さんになって幸せに暮らしたのです。
　The Princess Gourd became the bride of the King and lived happily ever after.

ワンポイントアドバイス

・「ドンブラコ、ドンブラコと大きなうりが流れてきます」： “She saw a large gourd was flowing in the river, floating up and down toward her.”

　英語では「ドンブラコ」に相当する表現が特にないため、「ゆらゆらと浮いた状態で、川を流れてくる」と英訳いたしました。
