The Sad Devil

　むかしむかし、いっぴき の ウシ を かっている おひゃくしょう が、ウシ を ぼくじょう へ つれて いきました。
　Once upon a time, a farmer was taking his sole cow out to the pasture.

　そして ウシ が くさ を たべる のを みながら、かみさま に おいのり を しました。
　While the farmer watched his cow grazing on the pasture, he raised his hands and prayed to god.

「かみさま。
"Dear God.

　いつも わしら を おまもりくださって、ありがとうございます。
　Thank you for always protecting us.

　ことしも この ウシ に、たっぷり くさ を たべさせて やってくださいまし」
　Please let this cow eat plenty of grass this year too."

　それを いっぴき の あくま が、しげみ の かげ から きいていました。
　This was overheard by a devil peeping through the bush.

「ふん。
"Well,

　にんげんて やつ は、なんでも かんでも うまく いく と かみさま に おれい を いう。
　it seems that humans and such thank god for everything good that happens,

　ところがだ、わるいこと が おきる と きまって おれたち あくま の せい に する。
　but when something bad happens ,they always decide to blame us devils.

　・・・くやしいな、おれ みたい に いい あくま も いるって いうのに。
　It is such a shame as I really am such a nice devil.

　ちくしょうめ、みていろ！」
　Damn it, I will show them! "


　それから、みっか が たちました。
　After three days had passed,

　おひゃくしょう の ウシ が ぬま に おちて、でられなく なって いました。
　the farmer`s cow had gotten stuck in a swamp and couldn’t get out at all.

　それを みると おひゃくしょう は、ひどく おこりました。
　As soon as the farmer saw this predicament, he became very angry.

「なんてこと を しやがる！
"What is this!

　また、あくま の やつ の イタズラ だな！」
　Once again, that devil is playing tricks and up to no good! "

　あくま は、しげみ の かげ から つぶやきました。
　The devil mumbled to himself behind the bush.

「ほらな。やっぱり、おれ の おもっていた とおり だ」
"Told you so. Just as I imagined, blaming me for all."

　おひゃくしょう は ウシ を ひっぱりだす ため に、てつだい の ひと を よび に いきました。
　The farmer then went off to find someone to help him pull out the cow.

「よし、いいこと を する チャンスだ！」
"Right, now its my chance to do a good turn!"

　あくま は しげみ から でてくると、うごけなくなった ウシ を たすけて あげました。
　As soon as the devil had come out of the bush, he went over and helped the stuck cow out of the mud.

「へっへっへっ、こんど こそ、おれ も おれい を いわれる だろう」
"Woo hoo, this time I wonder if I will also be thanked for my good deed."

　あくま は、ニコニコがお です。
　Said the devil with a beaming smile.

　やがて、おひゃくしょう が かえって きました。
　Before long ,the farmer came back.

　そして ウシ が ぬま から あがっている のを みると、おひゃくしょう は おおよろこび で いいました。
　And when he saw that the cow had come out of the swamp he became overjoyed.

「おおっ、かみさま。ウシ を ひっぱりあげて くださって、ありがとうございます」
"Oh, dear god. Thank you for pulling out my cow."
