　むかしむかし、まほうつかい と その でし が、ふたり で すんでいました。
　Once upon a time, a wizard and his disciple lived together.


　あるひ の こと、まほうつかい は でかけるとき に、でし に いいつけました。
　One day, the wizard was about to leave and told his disciple,

「ふろ の みず を、いっぱい に しておくように」
“fill a bath.”

　まほうつかい の すがた が みえなくなる と、でし は ソファー に ゴロン と よこ に なりました。
　When the wizard went out of sight, the disciple lied down on the sofa.

「あーあ、かわ から バケツ で みず を くんできて、ふろ を いっぱい に しておく なんて めんどうだなあ。
“Gee, it’s a pain to go put some water in a bucket from a river and fill a bath.

　まいにち まいにち しごと を やま ほど いいつけられて、いや に なっちゃうよ。・・・そうだ！」
　I’m sick of being told to do so much work every single day. ?Oh, I know!”

　でし は、ある めいあん を ひらめきました。
　The disciple got a good idea.

「そうそう、ぼく は まほうつかい の でし なんだ。こういうとき こそ、おぼえた まほう を つかってみなきゃ」
“That’s right. I’m a wizard’s disciple. This is the time for me to use magic that I learned.”

　でし は ソファー から とびおきる と、ほうき に むかって まほう の ことば で めいれい しました。
　The disciple hopped out of the sofa and said a magical phrase to give an order to a broom,

「ほうき よ、ほうき。かわ の みず を バケツ で くんで こい。そして その みず を、ふろ に いれるのだ！」
“broom, broom, go get water from a river. And then fill a bath with the water.”

　すると ほうき から ちいさな て が でてきて、りょうて に ふたつ の バケツ を つかむ と、ヒョッコリ、ヒョッコリ と あるきだした の です。
　Then, two small hands, suddenly appeared from the broom, held two buckets in both hands and started to walk pitter-patter.

「よし、うまく いったぞ！　これ で ぼく も いちにんまえ の まほうつかい だ！」
“Well, it worked! Looks like I’m a professional wizard now!”

　でし は、おおよろこび です。
　The disciple was excited with a joy.

　まほう の ほうき は バケツ を さげて、かわ へ はしって いきます。
　The magic broom with the buckets in its hands was running to the river.

　そして かわ の みず を バケツ に くむ と、ヒョッコリ、ヒョッコリ と もどってくる では ありませんか。
　And surprisingly, it got some water from the river and walked back pitter-patter.

　でし は、うれしくて たまりません。
　The disciple was so happy.

　まほう の ほうき は、くんできた みず を ふろ に ザザーッ と いれる と、また いえ を でて かわ へ はしっていきます。
　The magic broom put the water from the river into the bath and ran to the river again.

「ああ、らくちん だったら、らくちん だ。まほう を つかえば、らくちん だ！」
“Wow, it’s so easy. If I use magic, it’s so easy.”

　でし は バケツ を もって なんども いったりきたり する まほう の ほうき に、てびょうし を とりながら おどりました。
　The disciple danced with handclaps by the magic broom which was coming back and forth with the buckets in its hands.

　ふろ の みず は、あっと いうま に いっぱい に なりました。
　The bath got filled with water quickly.

「さあ、おわった ぞ」
“Well, it’s done.”

　でし は ニッコリ わらって、ソファー で また ひるね を しよう と おもいました。
　The disciple smiled and was going to take a nap on the sofa.

　ところ が、まほう の ほうき は とまりません。
　But, the magic broom didn’t stop moving.

　ふろ の みず は いっぱい で、もう あふれてしまう と いう のに、バケツ に みず を くんできて は ふろ に いれるのです。
　Though the bath was full with water and about to overflow, it kept getting and putting some water into the bath with the buckets.

　ふろ から あふれた みず が、ろうか に ながれでました。
　Before long, the water overflowed from the bath and flowed into the corridor.

「ああ、やめろ！　もう おしまい だってば！」
“Oh, stop! It’s enough.”

　でし が めいれい します が、ほうき は いうこと を ききません。
　The magic broom wouldn’t listen to the disciple’s order.

　もう いえ の いっかい は、プール の ように みず が たまって いました。
　The first floor of the house was already flooded like a swimming pool.

「このままじゃあ、おこられてしまうよ。・・・えーと、まほう を とく ことば は なんだっけ？　・・・えーと、えーと」
“I’ll get yelled at unless I stop this… Well, what was the words to unspell the cast? Uh… Umm..”

　どうしても、まほう を とく ことば が おもいだせません。
　He couldn’t remember the words to unspell the cast.

「ええーい、こうなれば、ほうき を こわしてやる！」
“Fine. Then, I’ll break the broom!”

　でし は オノ を もってくる と、まほう の ほうき を まっぷたつ に きりました。
　The disciple brought an ax and cut the magic broom in half.

　その とたん まほう の ほうき は ふたつ に ふえて、いままで の にばい の みず を はこんでくるのです。
　The two cut pieces soon turned into two brooms and got double water.

「えい！　えい！　はやく とまれ！」
“Hey! Hey! Stop now!”

　でし が オノ で ほうき を きるたび に、ほうき は ドンドン ふえていって、ドンドン みず を はこん で きます。
　The more time the disciple cut the broom, the more brooms were produced, which got more and more water.

「あーん、これじゃ、おぼれちゃうよー」
“Oh, no! I’ll drown.”

　でし は にかい へ にげよう と、かいだん を かけのぼりました。
　The disciple ran up the stairs to the second floor to evacuate.

　そのとき、まほうつかい が かえってきました。
　Then, the wizard came home.

「なんだ これは！　さては、でし の しわざ だな」
“What on earth is this? I must be my disciple’s fault.”

　ビックリ した まほうつかい は、あわてて まほう の ことば を となえました。
　The wizard was so surprised that he cast a spell,

「ほうき よ、とまれ！　みず よ、きえろ！」
“broom, stop! Water, disappear!”

　そのとたん、ふろ から あふれた みず は パッ と なくなり、ほうき も もと の ほうき に もどりました。
　Shortly after that, the water overflowed from the bath suddenly disappeared and the divided brooms turned into the original one.

「あの、その、・・・ごめんなさーい」
“Ah, well… I’m sorry,”

　かいだん の てすり に しがみついていた でし は、まほうつかい に あやまりました。
the disciple on the stairs, holding on to the railing, apologized to the wizard.

　まほうつかい は でし の あたま を コツン と たたく と、おおきな ためいき を ついて いいました。
　The wizard rapped the disciple on the head and gave a big sigh.

「やれやれ、ふろ の みずくみ を いやがる ようじゃ、いちにんまえ の まほうつかい には なれないぞ」
“Well, well, as long as you’re not willing to go get water, you won’t be able to a professional wizard.”
