　ある ちいさな おとこのこ が、たんじょうび に すず の へいたい の おもちゃ を もらいました。
　A little boy was given tin soldiers for his birthday.

　いっぽん の スプーン を とかしなおして つくった もの で、ぜんぶ で にじゅうごにん そろって いましたが、そのうち の ひとり だけは あし が いっぽん しか なかったのです。
　There were 25 of them, all of which had been made out of one tin spoon. However, one of them was missing one leg.

　それ と いうのも、この へいたい が いちばん さいご に つくられた ため、すず が たりなく なってしまったのです。
　That’s because this soldier had been made last and there was not enough tin to finish his leg.

　それでも この へいたい は、いっぽんあし の まま しっかり たっていました。
　Nevertheless, this solder stood firmly on one leg.

　おとこのこ は ほか に、かみ で できた おしろ の おもちゃ も もらいました。
　The little boy was also given a paper castle.

　その おしろ の いりぐち には、ひとり の おどりこ が かたあし を おもいっきり あげて おどっています。
　At the entrance of the castle was a girl dancing with one of her legs raised up high.

「ああ、あの おどりこ も いっぽんあし だ。ぼく の およめさん に ちょうどいい」
“Oh, that dancer has only one leg just like me. She is perfect to be my wife.”

　いっぽんあし の へいたい は、おどりこ に ひとめぼれ して、そのよる は おもちゃばこ の なか で、おどりこ から め を はなさず に すごしました。
　Having fallen in love with the dancer at first sight, the one-legged soldier spent all night staring at the dancer from the toy chest that he was in.

　ところが あくるあさ、まどべ に おかれた いっぽんあし の へいたい は、すきまかぜ で まど が ひらいた ひょうし に、よんかい から した の みち に おちて しまったのです。
　In the next morning, however, the one-legged soldier was placed right by the window. And when the wind blew the window open, he fell from the 4th floor onto the street.

　それ を とおりかかった ワンパク こぞう が みつけて、しんぶんし で つくった ふね に のせて みぞ に ながしました。
　A naughty boy who happened to pass by found the soldier. He put it on a boat he made with a newspaper and threw it in the ditch.

「どこへ いくんだろう。はやく、あの おどりこ の ところ に もどりたいな」
“Where am I going? I wish I could return to where the dancer is soon.”

　はやい なみ に ゆすぶられて いるうちに、しんぶんし の ふね が やぶれて、すず の へいたい は みず の なか へ しずんで しまいました。
　Fast moving waves eventually ripped the boat, and the tin soldier started sinking into the water.

　さて、それ を エサ と かんちがいした あわてんぼう の さかな が、すず の へいたい を のみこん で しまいました。
　A careless fish thought the tin soldier was his food and swallowed it.

　やがて その さかな は りょうし に つられて、それ を かった あるいえ の おてつだいさん が さかな の おなか を ほうちょう で きりひらいて ビックリ。
　Soon the fish was caught by a fisherman and sold to a housemaid. When the maid cut the fish’s stomach, she was surprised.

「あら、この へいたい は たしか・・・」
“Oh, this soldier must be …”

　なんと さかな が かわれていった いえ は、もと の もちぬし の おとこのこ の いえ だったのです。
　Surprisingly, the fish was sold to the house of the boy who owns the soldier.

　テーブル には、あの おしろ も のっていて、おどりこ は あいかわらず あし を たかく あげて いました。
　The paper castle was on the table, and the dancer was raising her leg up high as she was before.

「やあ、ようやく かえってきた。ただいま、おどりこさん」
“Oh, I’m finally back. Hello, dancer.”

　いっぽんあし の へいたい が じっと おどりこ を みつめている と、もちぬし の おとこのこ が いっぽんあし の へいたい を つかんで いいました。
　When the one-legged soldier was looking at the dancer, the boy grabbed the solder.

「いっぽんあし の へいたい なんて、もう いらないや」
“I don’t want this one-legged soldier any more!”

　そして もえさかる ストーブ の なか に、ほうりこんで しまったのです。
　Then he threw the solder into the red-hot stove.

　へいたい は じぶん の からだ が とけていく のを かんじました が、どうすること も できません。
　The soldier felt himself melting but couldn’t do anything.

「さよなら、おどりこさん。いつまでも おげんきで」
“Good-bye, dancer. Take care of yourself…”

　そのとき、ふい に まど が ひらいて かぜ が ふきこみ、かみ の おどりこ が ヒラヒラ と まいあがる と ストーブ の なか の へいたい の ところ へ とびこんで きました。
　Just then, one of the windows opened suddenly and the wind came in. The paper dancer soared in the air and flew to the soldier in the stove.

「やあ、きてくれたんだね。ありがとう、はなよめさん」
“Oh, you came to be with me? Thank you, my bride.”

　やがて かみ の おどりこ は もえつき、すず の へいたい も すっかり とけてしまって ハートがた の ちいさな かたまり に なりました。
　Soon the paper dancer burned out. The tin soldier completely melted into a small heart shaped tin.
