　むかしむかし、あるところ に、うそつき の めいじん が いました。
　Once upon a time, there lived a man called a great liar.

　その めいじん は とし を とって からだ が よわくなり、もうすぐ しぬ ばかり と なりました。
　As he got older, he got in frail health. And he was then waiting to die.

「うそつきめいじん と いっても わるいうそ は つかず、うそ で ひと を わらわせる いいひと だった」
”Although he was called a great liar, he never made up a harmful lie, he always made people laugh with his white lie.”

　みんな そういって、うそつきめいじん の ところ へ あつまってきました。
　People agreed and they gathered at home of the great liar.

　すると うそつきめいじん は、ちいさな こえ で いいました。
　Then the great liar whispered.

「みなさん、どうか げんき で くらして ください。そのため の おかね を、すこし ばかり ようい しています。
”Everyone, I hope all of you will be well. I prepared a small amount of money for you.

　わたし が しんだら、この いえ の ゆかした を ほって みてください。つぼ の なか に、おかね が はいっています」
　Please dig out the underfloor of this house when I die, and you will find a pot filled with money. ”

　まもなく、うそつきめいじん は なくなりました。
　Soon after, the great liar passed away.

　おそうしき が おわると、みんな は ゆかした を ほってみました。
　After the funeral, people dug out the underfloor.

 　うそつきめいじん が いったとおり、つぼ が でてきました。
　They found a pot as the great liar told.

　その つぼ の ふた を とってみると、いちまい の かみ が 入っていました。
　Taking off the lid of the pot, there was a piece of paper inside.

　その かみ には 《 みなさん、これが わたし の さいご の うそ です 》 と、かいて ありました。
　It said “everyone, this is my last lie”
