　むかしむかし、たいへん けちんぼう な おやじ が おりました。
　Long ago, there lived a very stingy father.

　この おやじ が びょうき に なり、いよいよ、いのち が あぶない と いう とき、こどもたち を まくらもと に よびよせ、
　When he became ill and was almost dying, he gathered his children to his bed.

「おまえたち に いって おく が、わし は おてら の きふ も たくさん した のに、いまだ に ごくらくから は、なん の おとさた も ない。
“Let me tell you this in advance. Even though I’ve donated lots of money to temples, I still haven’t heard from the heaven.

　わし が しんだ から と いって、これ いじょう、むだ な かね を つかって は ならぬ。
　Do not waste any more money even when I die.

　かならず、かね の かからない そうしき を するんだぞ。
　Make sure to hold a funeral that doesn’t cost too much.

　よいな」
　Understood?”

と、みんな に ねん を おしました。
　He emphasized so to everyone.

　こどもたち は、
　The children said,

「それでは、ゆいごんどおり に いたします が、かんおけ は、こし（→かんおけ を はこぶ、せんよう の みこし）に だしましょうか？」
“We’ll do as you wish then, but do you want us to transport your coffin on a Koshi (a special carrier used to transport a coffin)?”

と、いう と、おやじ は、
　The father said,

「いや、それ は かね が かかり すぎる」
“No, that costs too much.”

「では、ぎっしゃ で、はこびましょうか？」
“How about an oxcart?”

「それも、かね が かかる」
“That’s still costly.”

「それでは、ふたりぐらい に、かつがせましょうか？」
“How about having two men carry it?”

「いや、それ では、ふたり も やとわねば ならぬ。かね が かかる から だめ」
“No, you would need to hire two men for that. That’s costly.”

「では、いったい、どうしましょう？」
“What should we do then?”

　すると、おやじ は、
　Then the father exclaimed,

「えい、めんどう な。
“What a bother!

　しんだら、おれ が あるいて いこう」
　I’ll walk on my own when I die.”
