　むかしむかし、ある おてら に、むらびとたち から 『ホラふき おしょう』 と よばれている おぼうさん が いました。
　A long time ago, there lived a priest who was called “a tale-bearer priest” among village people in a temple.

　この おしょうさん、あんまり ホラ ばかり ふいて いる ので、むらびとたち は おしょうさん の いうこと を まったく しんよう していません。
　Since the priest always made up stories, no one in the village believed what he said.



　あるひ の こと、おしょうさん は むらびとたち を おどろかせて やろう と おもい、
　One day, an idea came up in his mind to surprise people.

　おてら の もんぜん に ある おおきな いけ の ほとり に、こっそり と こんな たてふだ を たてました。
　He put an announcement by the large pond in front of the temple’s gateway.

《あす の おひる、この いけ から りゅう が てん に のぼる で あろう。いけ の ぬし の りゅう より》
“Tomorrow at noon, a dragon is going up above from this pond. From dragon, the master of the pond. ”

　さあ、この たてふだ を みた むらびとたち は びっくり です。
　Now the people who saw this announcement were very surprised.

　むかし から この いけ には りゅう が すんでいる と いわれて いる ので、みんな は この たてふだ を しんじました。
　People believed the announcement because it was said that a dragon was living in this pond from long time ago.

　ですから つぎ の ひ の あさ には、いけ の まわり は くろやま の ひとだかり です。
　No wonder why everyone was piled around the pond in the next morning.

　それ を みて、おしょうさん は うれしそう に わらい ました。
　By looking at the scene, the priest laughed delightedly.

「あっはははは。むら の ものたち め、わし の いたずら に、まんま と ひっかかった わい。
“A-ha-ha-ha! Look at that, those village people were completely tricked by my joke.

　さて、おひる に なったら でていって、わし の しわざ だと はなして やろう。
　Well, I will go in front of them at noon and tell them it’s my joke.

　みんな の あきれた かお が、みもの じゃわい」
　I can’t wait to see their amazed look.”



　やがて、おひる が ちかづいて きました。
　Soon after, noon had come.

「よし、そろそろ いく と するか」
“All right. It’s time to go.”

　おしょうさん が でかけよう と すると、そら が にわか に くもって くらく なって きました。
　As he was going out, suddenly the sky was getting cloudy and dark.

　そして め の まえ の いけ から、なんと ほんもの の りゅう が すがた を あらわして、
　Then a real dragon showed up from the pond before him

　ぎんいろ の うろこ を ひからせながら くろい くも の なか へ きえていった の です。
and vanished to the dark cloud with glittering his silvery scales.

　むらびとたち は おどろきました が、もっと おどろいた のは いたずら を した おしょうさん です。
　The village people were very surprised, but the priest who tricked people was more surprised.

「なっ、なんと！　まさか ほんとう に りゅう が いる とは・・・」
“Oh my goodness! I can’t believe a real dragon was actually living in the pond.”

　しばらく ぼうぜん と していた おしょうさん ですが、すぐ に むらびとたち の まえ に かけだす と おおごえ で いいました。
　He was stunned for a while, but soon he ran in front of the village people and said loudly,

「おーい、よく きけ！　あの たてふだ はな、じつ は わし が たてたんじゃ。
“People! Listen to me! I put the announcement.

　わし が たてた  おかげ で、りゅう が あらわれたんじゃ！」
　Because of me put the announcement, the dragon showed up!”

　けれども、むらびとたち は、
　But the village people said,

「ほれ、また いつも の おしょう の ホラ が はじまった。りゅう が あらわれた のを、じぶん の てがら に しよるぞ」
“Here comes his lie as always. He is taking the credit for the dragon’s appearance! ”

「ほんに、しようのない おしょう じゃ」
“He is good-for-nothing!”

と、だれ も しんじなかった と いう こと です。
　And no one believed the priest at all.
