　むかしむかし、アメリカのある町に、大きな教会がありました。
　Once upon a time in a small town in America, there was a big church.

　教会には天にそびえる高い塔があって、立派な鐘(かね)がつるされています。
　The church had a tower soaring heavenward. In the church, a splendid bell was hung.

　その鐘には『クリスマスの夜にだけ鳴る』という、不思議な言い伝えがありました。
　There was a mysterious legend that the bell “rings only on the night before Christmas.”

　ところがまだ一度も、この鐘が鳴る音を聞いた人はありませんでした。
　However, no one ever heard the bell ringing.

　クリスマスが近づくと、町の人たちは塔を見上げて話し合います。
　Whenever Christmas came around, people in the town looked up at the tower and said to each other.

「今年こそは、あの鐘の鳴る音が聞けるかなあ？」
“This will be the year that we hear the bell ringing, perhaps?”

「わしは八十年も生きているが、まだ一度も聞いたことがない。
“I am 80 years old but I have never heard it.

　なんでも、わしのじいさんが子どもの頃に聞いたそうだが、それは素晴らしい音色だったそうだ」
“I hear, my grandfather once heard it when he was a child, and it was a beautiful sound.”

「どうすれば、あの鐘はなるのだろう？」
“How can we get the bell ringing?”

「神さまに贈り物をすれば、鳴るという話だよ」
“They say, if you bring a gift to the God, the bell will ring.”

　さて、この町のはずれの小さな村に、ペドロという男の子と弟がいました。
　Meanwhile, in a little village at the edge of the town, a boy called Pedro and his little brother lived.

　ある日、ペドロは弟に言いました。
　One day, Pedro said to his little brother.

「クリスマスの教会って、とってもにぎやかなんだってさ」
“They say, the church on Christmas is very busy and lively.”

　すると弟は、目を輝かせてせがみました。
　His little brother’s eyes shone, and he begged Pedro.

「わあ、ぼく、行ってみたいなあ」
“Wow, I wish I could go there.”

「よし、連れて行ってあげるよ」
“OK, I will take you there.”

　ペドロは、弟と約束しました。
　Pedro promised to his little brother.

　そして、待ちに待ったクリスマスの前の夜。
　They waited and waited, and now, it was the night before Christmas.

　ペドロと弟はしっかりと手をつなぐと、町へ向かいました。
　Pedro and his little brother held hands tightly and headed to the town.

　町の入り口まで行った時、二人は女の人が倒れているのを見つけました。
　When they came to the entrance to the town, they saw a woman lying on the ground.

「どうしたのかな？　この人、動かないよ。お兄ちゃん、どうしよう？」
“What is wrong with her? She is not moving. What can we do, Pedro?”

「このままほうっておいたら、こごえ死んでしまう。困ったなあ？」
“If we leave her now, she will freeze to death. Oh, what can we do.”

　あたりには、誰もいません。
　No one was around them.

　ペドロはポケットから銀貨を取り出すと、弟に差し出しました。
　Pedro took a silver coin out of his pocket. He handed it to his little brother.

「この銀貨は、神さまへの贈り物だよ。ぼくはこの人を助けるから、一人で行っておいで」
“This silver coin is a gift to the God. I will help her so you will go on your own.”

「えっ、ぼく、一人で行くの？　お兄ちゃんだって、あんなに行きたがっていたじゃないか」
“What, am I going on my own? Pedro, you really wanted to go too, didn’t you.”

「いいんだ。さあ、行っておいで」
“Don’t worry. Now, you go.”

　弟は仕方なく、一人で町の中へ入っていきました。
　His little brother had no choice but to go into the town on his own.

　教会の中は、たくさんの人でにぎわっていました。
　The church was busy and lively with many people.

　どの人も神さまへの立派な贈り物を、得意そうに持っています。
　Everyone brought gorgeous gifts to the God, and they all looked proud.

　キラキラと、まぶしく光る宝石。
　Sparkling, and brightly shining jewelry.

　山のような、金貨。
　A mountain of gold coins.

　立派な、銀食器。
　Gorgeous silverware.

　誰もが素晴らしい贈り物をして、鐘を鳴らそうと考えていました。
　Everyone was trying to get the bell ringing by bringing wonderful gits.

　けれど、鐘は鳴りません。
　However, the bell never rang.

「今年こそ、鐘を鳴らしてみせるぞ！」
“This will be the year that the bell rings!”

　最後に王さまも、命の次に大切にしている金の冠(かんむり)をささげました。
　Eventually, the King brought his gold crown that is his most important thing after his own life.

(さすがに、これで鐘が鳴るだろう)
(This must be good enough. Now, the bell will ring.)

  みんなはジッと、耳をかたむけました。
　Everyone stayed still and tried to listen carefully.

　でも高い塔の上は、シーンと静まり返ったままです。
　Still, the top of the tower was entirely silent.

「ああ、なんと、王さまの金の冠でもだめなのか」
“Alas, even the King’s gold crown is not good enough.”

「きっとあの鐘は、永久(えいきゅう)に鳴らない鐘なんだ」
“Probably, that bell will never ring forever.”

「そうだ。そうに違いない」
“Yes, it must be so.’

　人々があきらめて帰りかけた、その時です。
　People gave up and began to leave. It was when they heard

♪カローン、コローン、カローン、コローン・・・・・・。
　Ding-Dong, Ding-Dong …

　突然、塔から美しい鐘の音が響いてきたではありませんか。
　Out of the blue, the beautiful bell sound echoed from the tower.

「あっ！　鳴った。とうとう鳴ったぞ！」
“Oh! The bell is ringing. Ringing at long last!”

「なんて、美しい音色なんだ」
“What a beautiful sound.”

「それにしても、鐘を鳴らすほどの贈り物をしたのは、いったい誰だろう？」
“Anyway, someone brought such a special gift that the bell rang. Who was it?”

　王さまをはじめ、人々はいっせいに振り返りました。
　People, let alone the King, turned around all at once.

　するとそこにはペドロの弟が、はずかしそうに立っていました。
　Pedro’s little brother was standing there shyly.

「ぼく、お兄ちゃんから預かった銀貨を一枚、神さまにささげただけだよ」
“My elder brother left me with a silver coin. I just brought it to the God.”

　弟は、そう言ったあと、
　The little brother told them so.

(お兄ちゃんの助けてあげたあの女の人は、きっと大丈夫だろうな)
(The woman Pedro helped with should be all right.)

と、思いました。
　That is what the little brother thought then.

　素晴らしい贈り物というのは、高価(こうか)だからよいのではありません。
　A wonderful gift is not necessarily something expensive.

　大した物ではなくても、贈る人の心がこもっていればよいのです。
　Even when it is a little gift, as long as the gift carries warm heart of the sender, it is good enough.

ワンポイントアドバイス :

・「むかしむかし、〜に」 … “Once upon a time in …” （昔話の冒頭でよく使われる表現です。）

・「〜という話だよ」、「なんだってさ」 … “They say …”

・「（彼女）どうしたのかな？」 … “What is wrong with her?”（”What is the matter with you?”は、相手の様子がややおかしい時に言いますが、この場合は明らかに問題がありますので、上記の表現がより適切です。また、何気なく「どうしたの？」と尋ねる場合は、”What is the matter”がいいでしょう。）

・「（彼女）こごえ死んでしまう」 … “She will freeze to death.”

・「ペドロはポケットから銀貨を取り出すと、弟に差し出しました」 … “Pedro took a silver coin out of his pocket. He handed it to his little brother.” （”take A out of B” = 「AをBから取り出す」； ”hand A to B” = 「AをBに手渡す」）

・「お兄ちゃん」 … 英語圏では兄弟間を名前で呼び合う習慣ですので、英訳は”Pedro”としています。尚、「兄貴」「姉貴」といった呼びかけにbrotherやsisterを略した ”Bro”や”Sis”はありますが、かなりくだけた状況での使用となります。

・「みんなはジッと、耳をかたむけました」 … “Everyone stayed still and tried to listen carefully.” （”stay still” = 「じっとして動かない」）

・「素晴らしい贈り物というのは、高価だからよいのではありません」 … “A wonderful gift is not necessarily something expensive.” （直訳すると、「素晴らしい贈り物というのは、必ずしも高価なものとはかぎりません」）
