　むかしむかし、山のすその村に、いかとみという狩人(かりゅうど)が住んでいました。
　Once upon a time, there lived a hunter called Ikatomi at foot of a mountain.

　よく晴れた、春の朝の事です。
　It was a sunny spring morning.

　いかとみはいつものように、獲物を探しに山を登っていきました。
　As usual, Ikatomi climbed up the mountain, looking around for animals to hunt.

「やあ、いい朝だなあ」
“What a lovely morning.”

　いかとみが空を見上げると、すみきった青空に白いかすみのような物がいくえにもたなびいているのが見えました。
　Ikatomi looked up at the sky. It was when he saw some objects like layers of white mist flying in the clear blue sky.

　その白い物は不思議な事に、フワフワと空を飛んで近くの湖に降りていきました。
　Mysteriously, the white objects were floating in the air and coming down to the nearby lake.

「あっ、あれは白鳥か？　八羽もいるぞ」
“Oh, are they swans? Eight of them.”

  いかとみは、急いで湖に近寄りました。
　Ikatomi hurried to the lake.

　すると湖で泳いでいるのは白鳥ではなく、今まで見た事もないほど美しい八人の乙女たちだったのです。
　To his surprise, it was not swans but eight young beautiful ladies that were swimming in the lake. He had never seen such beautiful ladies.

　いかとみが、ふとあたりを見回すと、少しはなれた松の枝にまっ白い布がかけてあります。
　Ikatomi looked around and happened to find pure white clothing hanging over a pine tree branch that is slightly away from him.

「なんてきれいな着物だろう。これはきっと、天女(てんにょ)の着る羽衣(はごろも)にちがいない。
“What beautiful clothing. These must be feathered robes of the heavenly maidens.

　持って帰って、家宝(かほう)にしよう」
　I will take one back home and keep it as my family treasure.”

　いかとみは、そのうちの一枚をふところにしまいました。
　Ikatomi put one of the feathered robes into his pocket.

　やがて水浴びをしていた天女たちは水からあがると、羽衣を身につけて空に舞い上がっていきました。
　Before long, the heavenly maidens came out of the water. They put the feathered robes back on and flew up into the sky.

　でも１人の天女だけが、その場に取り残されてしまいました。
　However, one of the heavenly maidens was left alone there.

　いかとみが彼女の羽衣を取ってしまったため、天に帰れないのです。
　She was unable to go back to the heaven because Ikatomi took her feathered robe away.

　しくしくと泣きくずれる天女の姿に心を痛めたいかとみは、天女に羽衣をさし出しました。
　Ikatomi saw the heavenly maiden weeping sadly. He felt sorry and gave her feathered robe back to her.

「まあ、うれしい。ありがとうございます」
“Oh, lovely!  Thank you.”

　にっこりと微笑む天女にすっかり心をうばわれたいかとみは、羽衣を返すのを止めました。
　The heavenly maiden smiled at Ikatomi. He was so fascinated by her that he decided not to give her feathered robe back to her.

「この羽衣は返せません。それよりも、わたしの妻になってください」
“I cannot give this feathered robe back to you. Please marry me instead.”

　天女は何度も返して欲しいと頼みましたが、いかとみは返そうとしません。
　The heavenly maiden asked him to return it over and over again, but Ikatomi never did.

　そこで仕方なく、天女はいかとみの妻になりました。
　The heavenly maiden had no choice but to be his wife.

　そして、三年が過ぎました。
　Then, three years passed.

　いかとみと天女は仲良く暮らしていましたが、天女はいつも天にある自分たちの世界に帰りたいと思っていました。
　Ikatomi and the heavenly maiden got along with each other.However, the heavenly maiden always missed her home in the heaven and wanted to go back there.

　ある日、いかとみが狩りに出かけたときの事。
　One day, Ikatomi went out for hunting.

　家の掃除をしていた天女は、天井裏に黒い紙包みがあるのに気づきました。
　The heavenly maiden was cleaning the house when she noticed there was a black paper packet above the ceiling.

　その紙包みを開けてみますと、あの羽衣が入っていました。
　She opened the paper packet and found her feathered robe in it.

「・・・どうしよう？」
“… What can I do?”

　天女は、悩みました。
　The heavenly maiden did not know what to do.

　いかとみと暮らすうちに、いかとみの事が好きになっていたのです。
　All these years with Ikatomi, she found herself in love with him.

　でも、天の世界に帰りたい。
　I still want to go home in the heaven.

　このままいかとみの妻として地上で暮らすか、それとも天の世界に帰るか。
　Should I stay here in this world with Ikatomi as his wife, or should I go home?

　さんざん悩みましたが、天女は帰る事にしました。
　She thought and thought. Eventually, she decided to go home.

　その頃、いかとみは獲物をたくさんつかまえたので、その獲物を町で売って天女のためにきれいなクシを買って帰る途中でした。
　Meanwhile, Ikatomi hunted a lot of animals so he sold them in a town and bought a pretty comb for the heavenly maiden. He was on his way back home.

　ふと空を見上げると、
　He happened to look up at the sky when

　いかとみの妻の天女が天に帰る姿が見えました。
　he saw his wife, the heavenly maiden, going back to the heaven.

「あっ、まっ、まさか！　おーい、待ってくれー！」
“Oh, no, no!  Hey, wait, please!”

　いかとみは力の限り天女を追いかけましたが、そのうち天女の姿は見えなくなってしまいました。
　Ikatomi ran after her as much as he could, but eventually, the heavenly maiden was gone.

ワンポイントアドバイス

・「不思議な事に」 … “Mysteriously”

・「羽衣を身につけて 空に舞い上がっていきました」 … “put the feathered robes back on and flew up into the sky.” （洋服を着るときは「put … on」、脱いだものをまた身に着けるときは「put … back on」と表現します。）

・「取り残されてしまいました」 … “… was left alone.”

・「まあ、うれしい」 … “Oh, lovely!” （「I am pleased」は自分が喜んでいる状態を説明しています。思わず「うれしい」と言葉を発するような場合は、上記や「great!」といった表現の方が自然です。）

・「仕方なく、天女はいかとみの妻になりました」 … “The heavenly maiden had no choice but to be his wife.” （「仕方なく …する」は 「…するしかない（以外に選択肢がない）」の英語表現と同義になります。）

・「天女は、悩みました」 … “The heavenly maiden did not know what to do.” （英文を直訳すると「どうしていいかわからなかった」）

・「帰る途中でした」 … “He was on his way back home.”
