イノシシ の おやこ
The Wild Boar Mother and Child

　わがはい は、ミュンヒハウゼンだんしゃく。
　I am Baron Munchausen.

　みんな から は、『ほらふきだんしゃく』と よばれておる。
　But I am sometimes called the boasting baron by others.

　きょう は、すこし よい はなし を きかせて やろう。
　Today I would like to tell you a wonderful story.



　ある ふかい もり の なか で、わがはい は イノシシ の おやこ を みつけた。
　Deep in a certain wood I know, I once found a mother and child wild boar together.

「これは、よい えもの だ」
"This is such a great find." I thought to myself.

　イノシシ の にく は たべる と からだ が あたたまる ので、さむい ふゆ には もってこいだ。
　Wild boar meat is the perfect thing for the winter, as the meat warms up the body after being eaten.

　わがはい は すぐ に てっぽう を かまえる と、ねらい を つけて ひきがね を ひいた。
　In no time, I picked up my gun, aimed the barrel and fired my shot.

　ズトーン！
　Bang!

　しかし めいじん でも、ときには しっぱい を する。
　But even expert shots miss.

　てつぽう の たま は どこかへと とんでいき、その おと に びっくりした イノシシ の こ が いちもくさん に にげていった。
　The bullet from the gun flew off somewhere, made a noise and off ran the child boar as fast as it could.

　だが、なぜか ははおや の ほう は そこ に たちどまった まま、いっぽ も うごこう と しない。
　However, for some reason, the mother boar just stood there and didn’t move an inch.

「はて、なぜ にげない の だろう？　・・・おや？」
"Well, why don’t you run off? ... Why?"

　よく みる と、この ははおや は め が みえず、
　When I looked closely I noticed that the mother could not see and was blind.

　くち に イノシシ の こ の しっぽ の きれはし を くわえていたのだ。
　And that the end of the child boar’s tail was left dangling in the mouth of its mother.

　イノシシ の こ は じぶん の しっぽ を め の みえない ははおや に くわえさせて みちあんない を していたのだが、
　The child boar had made its mother hold onto its tail with her teeth and had guided her around.

　どうやら わがはい の はずれだま が、その イノシシ の こ の しっぽ の なかほど を きって しまった らしい。
　Somehow it seems my shot must have missed and cut off the child boars tail instead.

　だから ははおや は、うごく こと が できないのだ。
　So that’s why the mother does not move.

「ああ、なんと うつくしい、おやこ の あいじょう だ」
"Oh, how moving is the love between mother and child."

　わがはい の め から、おもわず なみだ が ポロリ と こぼれた。
　Uncontrollably, tears fell from my eyes.

「まったく、たま が あたらなくて よかった わい」
"I am so happy that my shot missed its mark"

　もしも おやこ の どちらか に たま が あたっていたら、のこった ほう から ざんこくな にんげん と うらまれた に ちがいない。
　If my shot had killed one of the two, then surely I would have been blamed as a cruel brutal human by the other.

「おふくろさん。おどかして、すまなかった。
"Mother boar. I’m so sorry that I frightened you.”

　もう にど と ねらわない から、げんき で くらせよ」
　“I will never fire at you again, please live happily from now on."

　わがはい は、まだ たべていない おひる の おべんとう を ははおや の まえ に おく と、そのば を あと に した。
　I then put my lunch that I had not yet eaten in front of the mother and then stepped back to my original position.

　そして、やがて もどってきた イノシシ の こ と ははおや は、わがはい の おべんとう を おいしそう に たべる と、
　Then, soon after, the child boar returned to its mother and they both happily ate up all my lunch,

　ははおや は みじかく なった イノシシ の こ の しっぽ を ふたたび くわえて、もり の なか へと はいって いった。
　The mother then, once more took up the shortened tail of the young boar and went into the woods.

『おやこ の あい は このよ で もっとも うつくしい もの で、なんびと も それ を ひきはなしては いけない』
"The love of a parent and its child in this world is something beautiful and should never be separated."

　これ が、きょう の きょうくん だ。
　So, this is the lesson of the day.

　では、また つぎ の きかい に、べつ の はなし を して やろうな。
　So, that’s that. When I have the opportunity, I would like to tell you another story.
