　むかしむかし、ひとり の むすめ が いました。
　Once upon a time, there was a young lady.

　この むすめ は とても びじん ですが、たいへん な なまけもの で、だらしのない おんな でした。
　She was so beautiful but a lazy and sloppy woman at the same time.

　いと を つむぐ とき に アサ の なか に ちいさい むすびこぶ でも あると、もう いや に なって しまって、
　When she found a knot in hemp while spinning a thread, she gave up.

　その もつれた たま ぜんたい を ひきちぎって、わき に ほうりだして しまう の です。
　Then she tore up the knot and set it aside.

　ところ が、そこ の いえ に ひとり の はたらきもの の じょちゅう が いて、
　Also, there was a maid in her house

　むすめ が すてた アサくず を ひろい あつめる と、それ を あらって じょうず に つむい で、きれい な きもの に おって もらいました。
　and she washed and untied the knots the young woman threw away, and then she made a beautiful kimono with them.



　さて、ある わかい おとこのひと が その なまけもの の むすめ を およめさん に ほしい と いって、
　Meanwhile, a young man proposed to the lazy woman

　いよいよ けっこんしき を あげる こと に なりました。
　and they prepared for their wedding.

　その まえいわい の ばん に、はたらきもの の じょちゅうさん が きれい な きもの を きて たのしそう に おどって います と、はなよめ が いいました。
　In the celebration party the night before the wedding, the bride looked at the hardworking maid who was dancing enjoyably in the beautiful kimono and said,

「あの じょちゅう、あたし の いとくず の きもの を きて いる のよ」

　それ を きいた おむこさん が、

「それは、どういう いみ だね？」
“What do you mean?”

と、はなよめさん に たずねました。
　he asked the bride.

　そこで およめさん は、
　Then,

「あの じょちゅう は、わたし が すてた アサくず で おった きもの を きている の です」

と、せつめい した の です。
　the bride explained.

「それは、なんと すばらしい！」
“Oh, how nice!”

　おむこさん は これ を きく と、むすめさん が なまけもの で、
　The gloom realized that the bride was a lazy woman

　あの まずしい しょうじょ が はたらきもの で ある こと を しりました。
　and the poor made was a hardworking girl.

　そこで むすめさん との けっこん を ことわる と、
　Then he declined getting married to the lazy woman

　あの じょちゅうさん の ところ へ いって かのじょ を およめさん に えらんだのでした。
　and instead, he chose the made to be his bride.
