　むかしむかし の おはなし です。
　This is a story from long, long ago.

　いっとう の メスウシ が かわ に みず を のみ に いった とき、ついで に かわ の ほとり の あおい くさ を いっぱい たべました。
　A cow went to the river to drink some water and ate a lot of green grass by the river.

　さて かえろう と すると、ふうん な こと に はらぺこ の ライオン に あって しまいました。
　When the cow was about to go home, she unfortunately encountered a hungry lion.

「おい、メスウシ。かくごしろ。おまえ を、たべて しまうぞ！」
“You, cow. Be prepared. I will eat you!”

　ライオン は、すぐ に とびかかり そうな いきおい です。
　The lion looked as if he was going to attack her any second.

　メスウシ は あとずさり しました が、でも き を とりなおして かんがえました。
　The cow backed away at first but had a second thought.

(どうせ、いつか は しぬ の です。それなら、わたし を ほしがっている ライオン に、わたし の からだ を やって しぬ のが、りっぱな しにかた かもしれない)
(I’m going to die someday anyway. If so, it may be a honorable thing for me to offer myself to a hungry lion who is craving me.)

　メスウシ は、ライオン に いいました。
　So the cow said to the lion,

「どうぞ、わたし を たべて ください。でも、ひとつ おねがい が あるのです」
“Sure, go ahead and eat me. But I have one favor to ask you.”

「なんだ？」
“What is it?”

「おはら を すかせて いる こウシ が、わたし の かえり を まっています。
“My hungry little boy is waiting for me to come home.

　どうか わたし に、おっぱい を やり に いかせて ください。
　Please let me go home and feed him for the last time.

　すぐ に、もどって きます から」
　I promise to come back as soon as possible.”

「だめだ！　かえって こない に、きまって いる！」
“No way! I’m sure you’ll never come back!”

「かえって きます。
　“Yes, I will.

　やくそく は、まもります。
　I’ll keep my promise.

　いま こウシ に のませなければ、わたし の おっぱい は むだ に なって しまいます。
　If I don’t feed the little boy today, my breast milk will be wasted.

　なにか の やくにたつ と いうこと は、とても だいじな こと でしょう？」
　It’s very important to be helpful for something, isn’t it?”

「・・・ふむ。じゃあ、いってこい。おれ は、ここ で まっている」
“… I see. You may go, then. I’ll be waiting for you right here.”

　ライオン は しぶしぶ ながら も、しょうち しました。
　The lion agreed reluctantly.

　メスウシ は いそい で いえ へ かえる と、こウシ を よびました。
　The cow hurried back home and called the little boy.

「さあ、おいで ぼうや。わたし の おっぱい を、たっぷり と おのみ」
“Come here, my little boy. Drink my milk as much as you want.”

　ところ が りこうな こウシ は、おかあさん の ようす が いつも と ちがう こと に き が つきました。
　However, the smart little boy noticed his mother acting differently.

「おかあさん、なにか しんぱいごと が あるんでしょう？
“Mama, are you worried about something?

　はなしてよ。
　Tell me.

　はなして くれなければ、ぼく、おっぱい を のまないよ」
　I’m not going to drink your milk if you don’t tell me.”

　こウシ が あまり に しんけん なので、メスウシ は とうとう ほんとう の こと を はなしました。
　The boy looked so serious that the cow told him the truth.

「ね、わかったでしょう。
“You see?

　いい こ だから、はやく のんでね。
　Drink some milk now, good boy.

　おかあさん は、ライオン と かたく やくそく を したのだから」
　I’ve made a promise with the lion.”

　すると こウシ は、なきだしそうな かお で おかあさん を みあげました。
　The little boy looked up at his mother, looking as if he was about to cry.

「おかあさん。
“Mama.

　ぼく も おかあさん と、いっしょ に いく。
　I’ll come with you.

　おかあさん が ひとり で ライオン の ところ へ いく と おもったら、ぼく かなしくて、おっぱい を のむことなんか できないよ」
　I’m too sad to drink your milk, knowing that you are going back to the lion alone.”

　メスウシ は、こウシ を だきしめました。
　The cow hugged the little boy.

「おかあさん」
“Mama,”

　こウシ は、いいました。
the little boy said,

「この よのなか で なにか の やくにたつ のは、いいこと だって いったでしょう。
“you told me that it’s important to be helpful for something in this world.

　おかあさん と ぼく を たべれば ライオン も おなか が いっぱい に なって、しばらく は ほかの どうぶつ を たべたり しないよ」
　Eating both of us should satisfy the lion’s hunger enough to not eat other animals for a while.”

「でも、おまえ まで が たべられる なんて・・・」
“But I can’t let the lion eat you…”

「いやだ！　おかあさん と いっしょ に いく！」
“No! I want to come with you!”

　こウシ は、けっして メスウシ の そば を はなれようとは しません。
　The little boy wouldn’t leave his mother’s side.

　しかたなく メスウシ は こウシ を つれて、ライオン の ところ へ いそぎました。
　So the cow reluctantly took the little boy with her and hurried back to where the lion was.

「ライオンさん、やくそくどおり かえってきました。
“Lion, I‘m back as I promised.

　こウシ も、いっしょです。
　My little boy is here with me as well.

　さあ、わたしたち を たベてください。
　Now you may eat us.

　あなた は おなか が ペコペコ でしょうが、あたしたち を たべれば しばらく は ほか の どうぶつ を たべなくて も いいはず。
　You must be starving, but if you eat two of us, you won’t crave other animals for a while.

　じぶん の からだ を ささげて ほか の どうぶつ を たすけるのは、たいへん たいじな こと ですから」
　We believe it’s a very good thing to sacrifice ourselves to save other animals.”

　ライオン は メスウシ の はなし を、ジッ と きいていました。
　The lion had been listening to the cow closely.

　その め には、なみだ が うかんでいます。
　His eyes were in tears.

「さあ、ライオンさん、どうぞ」
“Here, Lion. Go ahead.”

「ぼくも、どうぞ」
“Eat me, too.”

　ウシ の おやこ は そういうと、しずかに め を つむりました。
　Having said that, the cow and the little boy closed their eyes slowly.

　すると とつぜん、ライオン は おなか を おさえる と ウシ の おやこ に いいました。
　Suddenly, the lion grabbed his stomach and said to the cow and the son.

「あたっ、あいたた！
“Ow! It hurts!

　きゅう に、おなか が いたくなってきた。
　I’m getting stomachache just now.

　これでは なにも、たべること は できない。
　I can’t eat anything like this.

　ざんねん、ざんねん」
　What a shame, what a shame.”

　そして ライオン は、そのまま かえっていきました。
　Then the lion left without eating the two.
