　ある いなか のしょうやさん が、えど けんぶつ に でかけました。
　A village head from rural area went to Edo for sightseeing.

　えど は はじめて の まち です。
　It was his first time visiting Edo.

　きくところ に よれば、えど は ぶっそう な ところ で、みち を あるく にも、すこし の ゆだん も できぬ と いいます。
　He heard that Edo is not such a safe place, and you should never let your guard down when you stroll the streets.

　そこで しょうやさん、おとも の おとこ の ごへい に ふろしきづつみ を しっかり もたせて でかけた そうな。
　So the village head left for Edo with his attendant, Gohei, carrying his package cautiously.


　さて、えど の まち です。
　And now they arrived in Edo.

「これ、ごへい、おえど は あぶない ところ と いう から、つつみ を とられぬ よう き を つけろよ」
“Listen, Gohei. Be careful not to have the package stolen as I heard Edo is a dangerous place.”

「はい、だんなさま」
“Yes, Sir.”

「ほほう、どっち を むいても べっぴん な おなご ばかり じゃ、ごへい、つつみ は だいじょうぶ か？」
“Mmmm, I see pretty girls everywhere. Gohei, is the package okay?”

「はい、これ、このとおり」
“Yes, as you can see.”

「よしよし、なるほど きいたとおり、おえど は たいした まちじゃ。
“Good. Edo is quite a city as I heard.

　ところ で ごへい、つつみ は もっとるな、どうも き に かかって ならん わい」
　By the way Gohei, you still have the package? I’m worried about it.”

「もって います」
“I still have it.”

「よしよし、こんな に にんげん の おおい ところ では、き を つけにゃ ならん わい。
“Good. We should be careful as there are so many people here.

　それに しても き に かかる のう、これ ごへい、つつみ は まだ ある じゃろうな」
　I can’t stop thinking about the package. Gohei, you still have it, don’t you?”

「そ、それが だんなさま、もうしわけござりませぬ。
“S…Sir, I’m terribly sorry.

　いまのいま、とられまして ござりまする」
　Your package got stolen just a second ago.”

「なに、とられた とな。
“What? It’s got stolen?

　そうかそうか、いや、でかしたぞ。
　I see. Very well.

　これで ようやく、おちついて、おえど けんぶつ が できる わい」
　Now I can finally enjoy Edo in peace.”
