　むかしむかし、みやこ の はずれ に、たいそう びんぼう な おとこ が すんで いました。
　Once upon a time, there lived a very poor man in the suburb of the city.

　ところが その おとこ の しりあい が、とても しゅっせ して とおい くに の おとのさま に なったのです。
　But one day, a friend of his was greatly promoted to a load of a distant country.

　そこで おとこ は、その おとのさま の けらい として、ついて いく こと に なりました。
　Then the man was supposed to follow the load as his vassal.

「これで やっと、じぶん にも うん が むいて きたぞ」
“I finally have good luck,”

と、よろこんで みたものの、おとこ には たび の したく を する かね さえ ありません。
he was pleased but he didn’t even have money to get ready for the trip.

　それで おとこ は ながいあいだ つれそった やさしい にょうぼう を すてて、かねもち の いえ の あたらしい おんな を めとり、
　So the man abandoned his sweet wife who had been with him for years, and got married with a woman from a rich family

　その おんな に かね を だして もらう こと に したのです。
　so that he could get the woman to pay for the trip.

　ところ が あたらしい にょうぼう は わがまま で、おとこ に ふへい ばかり いって います。
　But his new wife was so selfish that she always complained to the man.

　そのうち に、おとこ は だんだん まえ の にょうぼう が こいしく なってきました。
　Eventually, the man started missing his ex-wife.

　けれど かね を だしてもらった てまえ、あたらしい にょうぼう を おいだす わけ にも いきません。
　Since he got the money paid, on the other hand, he couldn’t kick out his new wife.

「いま の にょうぼう とは、かたちだけ の ふうふ。
“I’m married to this woman for nothing.

　・・・ああっ、びんぼう でも よいから、まえ の にょうぼう と くらしたい のう」
　Oh, I wouldn’t mind being poor so I wish I could live with my ex-wife again.”

　おとこ は しだい に、そう おもう ように なっていました。
　The man gradually got to think so.

　そのうち なんねん か たち、とのさま は、また きょう へ もどる こと に なったのです。
　After years had passed, the load was scheduled to return to the city.

「これで、あいつ に あう こと が できる」
“I can finally see her.”

　おとこ は きょう に つく と あたらしい にょうぼう を じっか へ かえして、すぐに もと の じぶん の いえ へ もどりました。
　On arriving the city, the man made his new wife go to her parents’ house and he quickly returned to his old home.

　ところ が いえ に ついてみると、とても ひと が すんでいる とは おもえない ほど の ひどい あれよう です。
　When he got home, however, the house was run-down as nobody was believed to live in.

「これが、わし の いえ だろうか？」
“Is this where I lived?”

と、おとこ は もん の まえ に たちすくみました。
　The man was transfixed in front of the gate of the house.

「にょうぼう の やつ、わし を うらんで でていきおった に ちがいない。
“She must have left here blaming me.

　・・・いや、わるい のは わし だ。にょうぼう を せめても しかたがない」
　No, that was my fault. I can’t blame her,”

　そう おもいながら も なか に はいって みると、いつも の ばしょ に にょうぼう が すわって いる では ありませんか。
　he thought so and when he entered the house, he found his ex-wife sitting on the usual place.

「おまえ、まっていて くれた のか！」
“Hey, were you waiting for me?”

　おとこ は にょうぼう の そば へ かけより、しっかり と だきしめました。
　He ran to his ex-wife and held her tight.

「あなた、おかえりなさい」
“Welcome back home, darling.”

　にょうぼう は もんく ひとつ いわず、うれしそう に おとこ の かお を みました。
　She didn’t make a compliment and happily looked at the man’s face.

「ゆるしてくれ。わし が わるかった。
“Please forgive what I did.

　わし の にょうぼう は おまえ だ。もう けっして はなすまいぞ」
　My wife is you. I’ll never lose you again.”

　ふたり は よる の ふける のも わすれて かたりあい、あけがた に なって、やっと ねどこ に はいったのです。
　The two spent the whole night talking to each other and finally got to sleep at dawn.

　ひさしぶり の わがや に、おとこ は あんしん して ぐっすり と ねむりました。
　The man felt so relieved to be back home after a long time that he slept deeply.

　それから、どのくらい すぎたでしょう。
　Hours passed after that.

　おとこ が め を さました ころ には、もう ひ が さしこんで いました。
　When the man woke up, the sun was already shining.

「いやあ、よく ねむった」
“Oh, I slept great.”

と、にょうぼう を みて、おとこ は、
　Then the man looked at his wife.

「あっ！」
“Whoa!”

と、おどろいて、とびおきました。
he jumped out of the futon.

　それも そのはず、なんと そこには、ほね だけ に なった にょうぼう の しがい が よこたわって いるのです。
　He was surprised to see a skeleton body of his ex-wife lying there.

「これは いったい、どうしたことじゃ！？」
“What on earth is going on?”

　おとこ は ねまき の まま となり の いえ へ とびこみ、つま の こと を たずねました。
　The man in his nightclothes rushed to the house next door to ask about his ex-wife.

　すると、となり の いえ の ひと が いいました。
　Then the next-door neighbor said,

「ああ、その ひと なら きょねん なくなられましたよ。
“Oh, that woman passed away last year.

　なんでも、ごしゅじん が あたらしい おくがた を つれて とおい くに へ いって しまった とかで、それは ひどく かなしんで おられてのう。
　She was extremely grieved because her husband left for a distant country with his new wife.

　そのうち やまい に たおれられた ごようす じゃった が、かんびょう する ひと も のうて、しんで しまわれたそうな。
　Later on, she fell ill and died since there was nobody to take care of her.

　おそうしき を する ひと とて なく、なきがら も そのまま だと いうので、こわがって ちかよる ひと も ありません」
　Even a funeral wasn’t held so it’s too scary to approach her house with her dead body in.”

「では、きのう あったの は、にょうぼう の ゆうれい だったのか」
“So, you’re saying that the woman I met yesterday was a ghost of my ex-wife’s?”

　そう おもう と おとこ は きゅう に おそろしくなり、そのまま に にげだす と、どこか へ きえて しまいました。
　The man suddenly felt scared, ran away and disappeared somewhere.
