　むかしむかし、にんげん も うまれて いない、おおむかし の ある とし の くれ の こと です。
　A long time ago, at the end of the year when humans hadn’t come in the world yet,

　かみさま が、どうぶつたち に いいました。
　the God told animals,

「もうすぐ しょうがつ だ。がんたん には、みんな わたし の ところ に きなさい。
“The New Year is coming soon. All of you come to my place on January 1st.

　そして、さき に きた もの から じゅうにばんめ まで を、その とし の たいしょう と しよう」
　And I will make the one who come first till 12th as a leader of the year.”

  ところが、うっかりもの の ネコ は あつまる ひ を わすれた ので、ともだち の ネズミ に ききました。
 However, the careless cat forgot when to go to the God, and asked to his friend mouse.

　すると ネズミ は、
　The mouse said,

「ああ、しんねん の ふつか だよ」
“It’s on January 2nd.

と、わざ と うそ を おしえました。
　and it was his lie on purpose.



　さて、がんたん に なりました。
　Now January 1st came.

　ウシ は あし が おそい ので、あさ はやく に いえ を でました。
　Because the cow walks so slow, he left home early in the morning.

　ちゃっかりもの の ネズミ は、こっそり ウシ の せなか に のって かみさま の まえ に くる と、
　The shrewd mouse rode on a back of the cow secretly, and when they arrived at the God’s,

　ピョン と とびおりて いちばん さいしょ に かみさま の まえ に いきました。
　he jumped off from the cow and went to the God first.

　それで ネズミ が さいしょ の とし の たいしょう に なり、ウシ が にばんめ に なりました。
　That’s why the mouse became a leader of the first year and the cow became second.

　そのご、トラ・ウサギ・タツ・ヘビ・ウマ・ヒツジ・サル・ニワトリ・イヌ・イノシシ の じゅん に なりました。
　After that, the order became the tiger, the hare, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the sheep, the monkey, the chicken, the dog, and the boar.

　ところが ネコ は、ネズミ に おしえられたとおり ふつか に かみさま の ところ へ いきました。
　But the cat went to the God’s on 2nd as the mouse taught.

　すると かみさま は、
　Then the God said,

「おそかったね。ざんねん だけど、きのう きまったよ」
“You are too late. Sorry, but the leaders were determined yesterday.”

と、いう では ありませんか。
