　けちんぼう が、じぶん の ざいさん を きん に かえて、
　A miser turned his wealth into gold

　その きん の かたまり を ある ばしょ に うめました。
　and buried it in the ground.

　そうすると、けちんぼう は じぶん の いきがい も げんき も、ぜんぶ きん の かたまり と いっしょ に うめた ような きもち に なって しまいました。
　After that, he felt as if he buried his life and energy altogether with it.

　それで まいにち、うめた たから を みに いきました。
　So, he went to check his hidden wealth every day.

　ひとり の しょくにん が まいにち やってくる けちんぼう を かんさつ して、なぜ くるのか を みやぶりました。
　A tradesman observed the miser and found out why he came every day.

　そこで、けちんぼう が かえった あと で つち を ほりおこし、きん の かたまり を ぬすんで しまいました。
　So he dug up soil after the miser had gone, and stole the lump of gold.



　つぎのひ、けちんぼう が きてみます と、あな は からっぽ に なって いました。
　The next day, when the miser came, the hole was empty.

　けちんぼう は かみのけ を かきむしって、おいおい なきだしました。
　He was tearing his hair and began to cry bitterly.

　ないている けちんぼう を みた ひと が、しんぱい して こえ を かけました が、わけ を しると、
　A man saw him crying and addressed him anxiously.  But when he realized why,

「なんだ、それじゃあ、なく こと は ない でしょう。
“Well then, it is no use crying.

　だって あなた は、きん の かたまり が あった とき も、もっていない と おなじ だった の だから。
　Because, when you even had a lump of gold, it was virtually non-existent.

　だったら、いしころ を もってきて、きん の かたまり の かわり に うめて、
　So, why don’t you get a stone, and bury one instead of gold,

　それが きん の かたまり だと おもって いれば よいじゃ ありませんか。
　and you’d better take it as a lump of gold.

　いしころ が きん の かたまり の やくめ を はたして くれますよ。
　I am sure the stone would do a job.

　あなた は きん が そこ に あった とき も、きん を ちっとも やくだて なかった らしい からね」
　You did not make use of the gold at all when it was there, didn’t you.”



　この おはなし は、どれほど の かねもち でも、おかね を つかわず に ただ もっている だけなら、びんぼうにん と おなじ だと いう こと を おしえています。
　This story tells that no matter how rich you are, if you just keep money and do not use it, you are little short of a poor man.
