　ある とき、ゼウス の かみ は ヘルメス の かみ を よんで、
　One day, Zeus called Hermes.

「おおぜい の にんげんたち を さいばん する のに、まちがえる と いけない から、
“To prevent mistakes when judging large crowds,

　あなた が それぞれ の にんげん の やった わるいこと を かいがら に かきとめて ください。
　you should write every sin a person made on a shell.

　いちまい の かいがら に ひとり ずつ かいて、みんな の ぶん が できたら はこ に いれて、わたし の ところ へ もってきなさい。
　Use one shell per person, put them in a box, and bring them to me after you are done.

　そうすれば、わたし は いちまい ずつ その かいがら を とりだして、
　Then, I can take each shell from the box

　かいてある こと を よみながら、ただしい さばき を くだす こと が できる だろう」
　and judge each people correctly, while reading them,”

と、いいつけ ました。
　said Zeus.

　たしか に これは よいかんがえ でした が、
　This was a good idea, however,

　はこ の なか の かいがら は ごちゃまぜ に なって いる ため に、ゼウス が すぐ に つかみだす かいがら も あれば、なかなか でてこない かいがら も あります。
　all the shells got mixed up in the box, and it took time for some shells to be found.

　それで、ゼウス の さばき が はやく くだる ひと と、おそく くだる ひと が できて しまい ました。
　That is why there were people who were judged slower and some faster.



　わるいこと を した ひと が、すぐに ばつ を うけない こと が あっても、おどろいては いけません。
　Do not be surprised by bad people who do not get judged right away.

　じかん は かかっても、かならず ただしい さばき は おこなわれます。
　They will always get the judgment they deserve, even though it may take some time.
