　カメ の あし が おそい のを、ウサギ が バカ に して わらい ました。
　A hare was making fun of the tortoise for being so slow.

「あなた は あし が はやく ても、わたし の ほう が かち ますよ」
“I will win a race even if you can ran faster than me.”

と、カメ が いい ました。
　The tortoise said to the hare.

　すると、ウサギ は、
　Then the hare answered.

「そんな こと を いったって、くちさき だけだ。では、きょうそう しよう？　そうすれば、わかる」と、いい、
“I know you are all bark and no bite. Why don’t we have a race? We will find out who is faster soon.”

「だれ が ばしょ を きめて、かった もの に ごほうび を だす の ですか？」
“Who will decide the course and who will reward the winner?”

と、カメ は いい ました。
　The tortoise asked.

「キツネ が こうへい で りこう だから、あれ に たのもう」
“The fox is fair and smart. Let’s ask him to act as a judge.”

と、ウサギ は いい ました。
　The hare answered.

　そこで キツネ が、きょうそう を はじめる あいず を しました。
　So the fox started the runners off.

　たちまち、あし の はやい ウサギ が カメ を ひきはなし ました。
　The hare was soon far out from the tortoise.

　しかし、カメ は あきらめず に、やすまず あるき つづけ ました。
　But the tortoise kept going steadily without giving up to defeat the hare.

　ウサギ は あし が はやい と おもって あんしん している ものですから、とちゅう で おおきな き を みつける と、その こかげ で ひとやすみ しました。
　The hare was secured and careless about the race. When he found a big tree in the middle of the course, he lay down under the tree to have a break.


　それから しばらくして、ウサギ は おきあがり ました。
　Meanwhile, the hare woke up.

「あれ？　すこし ねむって しまったか。・・・まあいい、どうせ カメ は まだ うしろ に いるはず。あぁーあ」
“Oh, I fell asleep for a while. …Well, I know the tortoise should still be behind. ”

　ウサギ は おおきく のび を すると、そのまま ゴール に むかい ました。
　After the hare gave a big yawn and stretched himself, he started to run to the goal again.

「よーし、もうすぐ ゴール だ・・・と、・・・あれ？」
“OK, it is almost the goal … Oh, no! No kidding! ”

　じぶん が かった と おもって いた のに、なんと カメ が さき に ゴール していた の です。
　The hare believed he won the race, but the tortoise has already reached the goal.



　さいのう は あって も、いいかげん に やっていて だめ に なる ひと は たくさん います。
　Even though one is talented, lukewarm attitude ruins a man.

　また、さいのう は なくても、まじめ で しんぼうづよい ひと は、さいのう が ある ひと に かつ こと も ある の です。
　On the other hand, even though one is not talented, seriousness and patience may defeat the talented.

ワンポイントアドバイス
I know you are all bark and no bite. は、口先だけ、というウサギのセリフの訳で使用していますが、弱い犬ほどよくほえるという日本の言い回しの訳によく使われているためここで使用しました。


「そんな事を言ったって、口先だけだ。では、競争しよう？　そうすれば、わかる」
と、言い、の部分の訳ですが、前文で“Then the hare answered”としているため空欄としました。
