　むかしむかし、あるところに、とても花の好きなおじいさんがいました。
　Once upon a time, there was an old man who loved flowers.

　おじいさんは自分の家の庭に、いつもたくさんの花をうえています。
　He always planted a lot of flowers in the garden.

　おじいさんは毎朝早くに庭をきれいにそうじして、木にも草にも一本のこらずていねいに水をやります。
　Every early morning, he cleaned the garden and watered all of woods and grasses.

　新しく咲いた花を見つけると、おじいさんはよろこんでその花におじぎをしたり、お酒をそなえたりしました。
　When he found flowers beginning to bloom, he bowed to flowers and offered liquor.

　雨がひどく降ったり、風がはげしく吹くときなどは、おじいさんは夜中でも起き出して庭を見守ります。
　When it’s pouring rain or blowing hard,he woke up even midnight and kept an eye on the garden.

　もし折れそうな枝があると、竹で作ったささえをしてやります。
　hen he found a branch which is going to break off, he splinted it with a bamboo.

　しぼんだ花や、散ってしまった花を見ると、
　When he saw flowers which have withered or fallen,

「かわいそうになあ」
　he used to say ‘That’s so sad.’

と、ため息をついて涙をこぼします。
　and shed tears with a sigh.

　そして散った花びらをはき集めて、一つ一つ水できれいに洗います。
　He swept up the fallen petals, rinsed one of each,

　それからカメの中に入れて、土にうめてやります。
　put them in a crock and buried in the ground.

　花のお葬式(そうしき)です。
　It’s a funeral for flowers.

　おじいさんはこれほどまでに、花をかわいがっているのでした。
　He loved flowers so much.

　ある日の事、そのおじいさんの家のそばを、らんぼうな男たちが通りかかりました。
　One day, violent men passed by the old man’s house.

「おお、ここが花ぐるいのじいさんの家だな。入ってみよう」
‘Hey, it is a house of an old man who is crazy for flowers. Let’s go inside.’

　らんぼう者たちは、おじいさんの家のとびらをドンドンとたたきました。
　Violent men knocked the door.

「おい、おれたちにも、庭の花を見せろ！」
‘Hey, Let us see your flowers in the garden!’

　おじいさんは仕方なく、らんぼう者たちを入れてやりました。
　He had no choice but took them to the garden.

　庭にはちょうど、ボタンの花がいっぱい咲いていました。
　There were peonies blooming at their best.

　でもらんぼう者は花も見ないで、仲間たちと一緒に酒を飲みはじめました。
　However, violent men didn’t see any flowers and began to drink.

　そのうちに酔っぱらったらんぼう者は、そばにあったボタンの花の枝をおろうとしました。
　One of them was drunk and about to pick the branch of peonies.

　おじいさんはビックリして、
　The old man was astonished and cried

「あっ、やめてください。花がかわいそうです」
‘Oh no, please stop it. I’m so sorry for flowers.’

と、止めに入りましたが、
　he wanted to end their mischievous behavior,

「ええい、うるさい！　こうしてくれるわ！」
‘Shut up! Look at this!’

と、ボタンの花をみんなへしおって、笑いながら庭を出ていきました。
　They broke all the stem of the peonies and went out the garden with laughter.

　おじいさんはメチャクチャにされた花を見て、ポロポロと涙をこぼしました。
　The old man shed many tears when he saw flowers were broken into pieces.

「ああ、かわいそうに、かわいそうに」
‘Oh, poor flowers.’

　するとその時、
　And then,

「もし、もし」
‘Can you hear me?’

と、やさしい声がしました。
　He heard a gentle voice.

　おじいさんが振り向くと、美しい花の仙女(せんにょ)が立っていました。
　When he turned around, a beautiful flower nymph was standing there.

「おじいさん、そんなに悲しまなくてもいいですよ。花はみんな、元に戻してあげます」
‘You don’t have to be so sorry.I’ll make them back to the original.’

　花の仙女はそう言って、パッと消えてしまいました。
　the flower nymph said and suddenly disappeared.

　そしておじいさんが花を見てみると、いつの間にか花はみんな元通りになっており、どの花も前よりもっときれいな色になって咲いていました。
　He saw the flowers, they turned back to the same before without knowing when.Every flower bloomed much more beautiful than before.

「よかった。ほんとうによかった。・・・仙女さま、ありがとうございます」
‘I’m relieved. That’s great.Thank you so much for helping me, nymph.’

　あのらんぼう者たちは、あれからすぐに手や足の動かない病気になったという事です。
　Afterwards, it was said that the violent men had a disease that they were unable to move arms and legs.


　おじいさんは大好きな花といっしょに、いつまでも幸せに暮らしました。
　The old man lived happily ever after surrounded by his favorite flowers.
